First, “knowing computers” isn’t going to help much.

How do they subscribe in the first place? Or is it just a list that you’ve manually added the addresses to over time?

Word, WordPad, Publisher and even the infamous FrontPage, including many Microsoft web editors should NEVER be used for web pages. They guarantee that your web pages will NOT be cross-browser compatible because of all the Microsoft Schema code it adds. Only IE and Maxthon understand this code. Additionally, FrontPage requires server extensions be installed to work correctly. Also, OpenOffice is not a web editor.

Question by Robby M: What do people think about HTML in email newsletters?
If you sign up for email updates or notices from a company, are you put off by HTML formatting (images / background colors / etc) in the emails? Is there a point where the HTML formatting is too much? How to you feel about: inline links, font-sizes / text-formatting, background colors, tables, etc? What’s acceptable and what isn’t?

I think most are better WITH the HTML formatting than without. Although, if there is too much formatting or too many pictures so that it takes a long time to load, it doesn’t look good at all.
